The Project

When Autex Acoustics® set out to refurbish its London Showroom at 61-67 Old Street, the goal was ambitious: to create a space that didn’t just display products, but allowed people to truly experience them.

Curating an Acoustic Experience in Clerkenwell

Working in collaboration with Unispace, the vision was to transform the Clerkenwell showroom into a destination for the design community—one that blends workplace, showroom, and event space into a single, high-performing environment.

The challenge lay in making acoustics, something often invisible and difficult to quantify, immediately tangible. The response was to design a space where sound performance could be felt intuitively, through movement, materiality, and interaction.

Designing a Space that Makes Acoustics Visible

From the outset, the design intent was to express Autex’s products as architecture, rather than simply applying them to a finished interior.

Unispace developed a concept centred around a continuous, connected spatial thread, guiding visitors through a sequence of experiences while subtly demonstrating how acoustic conditions change across the environment. This approach turns the showroom into a live demonstration—where transitions between spaces reveal differences in sound control, clarity, and comfort.

Walls flow into ceilings, and surfaces become sculptural, blurring the boundary between product and structure. The result is a series of carved, organic volumes that define zones without relying on traditional partitions, reinforcing the idea that acoustic materials can shape both space and experience.

Rather than overwhelming visitors with branding, the design tells the Autex Acoustics story through material, texture, and form, creating a refined, gallery-like environment that encourages exploration.

A Compact Space Designed for Multiple Ways of Working

Despite its modest footprint, the showroom needed to perform in many ways. It operates as a flexible, multi-purpose environment—supporting client meetings and specification, hands-on product sampling, day-to-day workplace activity, and industry talks, workshops, and events. To enable this flexibility, the layout is deliberately fluid. Curtains replace fixed walls, allowing areas to expand or contract depending on use from intimate project discussions to large-scale presentations.

Each zone—from arrival and sampling to hospitality and event space—is interconnected, creating a seamless visitor journey while supporting very different acoustic conditions. This adaptability is critical, ensuring the space remains comfortable whether hosting a one-on-one meeting or a packed event.

An Immersive Journey Through Sound and Material

Visitors are welcomed into a calm, acoustically controlled arrival space before moving into areas designed for conversation, collaboration, and exploration. Sampling zones encourage hands-on engagement, while larger open areas demonstrate how the same materials perform under higher noise levels.

This layered journey allows people to see, touch, and hear the difference acoustic design makes. Importantly, the environment reflects real-world conditions. The space accommodates everything from quiet conversations to music and crowd noise, proving the effectiveness of the solutions across a full spectrum of sound.

Materiality that Supports Performance and Feeling

Material selection plays a dual role, enhancing both acoustic performance and atmosphere.

A palette of soft neutrals, rich textures, and layered fabrics creates a hospitality-driven feel, ensuring the space is warm, inviting, and comfortable for extended use. Subtle colour integration showcases the product range, while maintaining a cohesive interior.

This balance reinforces a key message: acoustic solutions don’t need to compromise on aesthetics—they can elevate them.

Product as Architecture

At the heart of the project is the integration of Autex products into the fabric of the space. Rather than being applied as finishes, products are used to define volume, guide movement, and control sound throughout.

Frontier™ Acoustic Fins form sculptural elements that shape zones and absorb sound. Groove™ panels in V1 are integrated into walls and joinery, combining performance with visual identity. Horizon™ Floating Panels provide overhead acoustic control across central areas. Curtain systems enable flexibility, adapting both spatial configuration and acoustic behaviour while interactive sampling displays encourage tactile engagement and specification.

The Result: A Space You Have to Experience

The refurbished London showroom succeeds in turning acoustic performance into a lived experience. It is flexible, supporting a wide range of uses within a compact footprint, and immersive, allowing visitors to understand acoustics instinctively.

Ultimately, the project bridges the gap between technical performance and human perception. Because while acoustics can be measured, their true value is felt—and the London showroom is designed to make sure every visitor leaves having experienced that difference firsthand.
